Candidates who are accepted into the program will begin their commitment with five weeks of training through a summer institute that is designed specifically for members of the Miami Teaching Fellows. Fellows will be exposed to seminars and workshops on standards, foundations of teaching, and classroom management – among other topics. During this training, Fellows will also participate in discussions and activities focused on the challenges and benefits of teaching in a diverse, urban educational setting.
The Miami Teaching Fellows training consolidates a great deal of training time into only a few weeks; thus, training is extremely demanding. Fellows must attend training five days a week. The typical daily schedule is from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Due to the critical part that training plays in the Miami Teaching Fellows program, Fellows cannot miss any portion of the training.
The 2008 Miami Teaching Fellows summer institute is tentatively scheduled to begin in mid-June 2008, lasting for five weeks, culminating with Fellows’ entrance into their own schools and classrooms.
Throughout the school year, Fellows will also be given access to additional professional development activities that are centered on specific classroom or instructional topics.
