Miami Teaching Fellows Home Miami Teaching Fellows Program Overview Earning Your Florida Teaching Certificate Who We Want to Become Miami Teaching Fellows The Application Process Frequently Asked Questions Contact Us

Please be sure to thoroughly read through the section on Eligibility, as this is a critical piece of the application process. Only applications of eligible candidates will be reviewed.

How Do I Apply?
We are currently accepting applications.  Our regular deadline is April 14, 2008. Due to the large volume of applications received and the selective nature of this program, candidates are highly encourage to apply early.

1. To apply to the Miami Teaching Fellows, candidates must a) complete and submit an online application that includes attaching a resume and answers to application questions (see below) and must b) be prepared to provide the program office with copies of official college transcripts if invited to interview.

Application Questions
The application questions should be addressed in 200 - 400 words each:

1. Nearly all Fellows are placed in 'high-need' schools that are located in low-income communities. Why do you want to teach in a high-need school?

2. The most important responsibility of a teacher is to ensure high academic achievement for all students. Describe a skill or ability that will help you fulfill this responsibility and provide an example of how you have effectively demonstrated this skill or ability in the past.

3.  Teaching Fellows will face new and significant challenges during their first year of teaching.  Describe a professional, personal or academic challenge you have overcome, and how that experience will contribute to your success as a Teaching Fellow.

Answers to these application questions provide us with information not captured elsewhere in the application. We use answers to these questions to evaluate your writing and critical thinking skills and more importantly, to gain a sense of your commitment to teaching students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).

Please do not send generic cover letters.

2. Candidates who submit a complete application will be notified within two weeks of their application status. If granted an interview, candidates will have the ability to select their interview date and time via an online scheduler link provided by the program at the time of notification. Please be prepared to provide, at minimum, an unofficial copy of your transcript at your interview, although official transcripts are highly preferred. A total of three official transcripts will be required if accepted to the Fellowship; therefore, we recommend that you request a total of three copies of your official transcripts in order to be prepared. Fellows may not begin the Training Institute if we have not received transcripts from every college and/or university attended.

3. After your interview, you will be notified of your interview status within four weeks. At that time, selected candidates will be supplied with an enrollment package containing additional, more detailed information on the program and next steps and providing an enrollment deadline for candidates to accept their selection into the program.

We strongly suggest that candidates register and take the General Knowledge (GK) exam – part of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) – as early as possible.  While the GK exam is also offered in a computer-based format, the essay portion must be taken on a planned testing date. As a result, candidates find it easier and more cost effective to take the entire test on a scheduled testing date. Please click here for more information on the GK exam and to register.

Candidates invited to interview with Miami Teaching Fellows will be provided additional information on which SAE test –and test administration date-- is appropriate, given their academic background.   Candidates will receive explicit direction regarding the SAE tests and dates with their invitation to interview. Depending on subject area, some tests may be available as computer-based examinations, while others require a paper-based administration at a testing site on a specific date. All examinations, both computer-based and paper-based, are pre-scheduled and administered at a designated testing center or test site, respectively.

Due to the competitive nature of our program and the limited space within each Fellows cohort, we strongly encourage you to apply early.
