Fellow profile: “I knew very little about Miami, but after visiting during my interview, I knew it was a city that encompassed the diversity and culture that I desired.”

-- Elizabeth Willkom, Elementary ESE Teacher, Miami Teaching Fellows 2005-2006 Cohort, Former International Service Volunteer and Counselor

Miami-Dade County offers the rare combination of urban energy, exotic natural beauty, and diverse cultural neighborhoods. Average high temperatures range from 75 degrees in the month of January to 88 degrees in July and August. Southern Florida offers panoramas of sweeping white sand beaches, bustling urban centers, and rural farm communities.

The 2005 census reported an estimated population of 2,376,014 in Miami-Dade County as a whole; and, as Miami Teaching Fellows know, there is no one single experience that defines living in Miami-Dade County. Living in Miami includes experiencing the art deco hotels of South Beach - and the colorful murals of Little Havana. It is the vivid art galleries in the Design District and the quiet streets of Coral Gables. It is historic buildings in Homestead and the bay-front parts of Coconut Grove. It is the towering high-rises of Brickell with its young professional population and the mangrove forests of the Everglades only a short drive away.

Each year, a number of outstanding professionals and recent college graduates relocate to Miami-Dade County to join the powerful network of Miami Teaching Fellows. For candidates planning a move to Miami, consider what type of housing you seek in terms of affordability, location, and amenities, to help guide your search. There are a number of resources available – be proactive by checking newspaper listings, consulting student service links provided by local universities, reviewing on-line apartment guides, and contacting realtors. Candidates invited to interview with the Miami Teaching Fellows program will arrange their own travel to Miami for their scheduled interview event; this offers an excellent opportunity for you to plan your trip in such a way to allow time to explore the diverse neighborhoods and communities of Miami-Dade County.

Living in Miami offers world class dining, professional sports, international festivals, innovative museums, wildlife adventures, sunny beaches, and the influence of Hispanic and Haitian communities that help to define the county’s culture and vitality. In the midst of all of this, children enter their classrooms every day in search of the best possible education. Miami Teaching Fellows commit to closing the achievement gap within this vibrant sub-tropical community.
